Procon Seizes More Than 187 kg of OMO Laundry Detergent Suspected of Being Counterfeit
An inspection at a store in Nova Iguaçu also uncovered expired food, products without proper labeling, and inadequate storage conditions
Procon seized more than 187 kilograms of OMO brand laundry detergent showing signs of counterfeiting during an inspection conducted this Wednesday (23) at a retail establishment in Nova Iguaçu, in the Baixada Fluminense region. The operation also resulted in the seizure of food unfit for consumption and the identification of several irregularities that led to the issuance of a citation against the store.
The inspection focused on verifying compliance with legislation regarding product labeling, particularly concerning the identification of the person responsible for the product. During the inspection, officials found evidence that some of the washing powder being sold might be counterfeit.
Expired Food and Irregularities
In addition to cleaning products, the Procon team identified a number of problems at the establishment. These included expired food, products lacking mandatory label information, damaged packaging displayed for sale, discrepancies between advertised and actual prices, and structural defects.
The agents also found irregularities in food storage and handling conditions, which compromise consumer safety.
In total, 94 kilograms and 26 liters of food and beverages considered unfit for consumption were seized, according to the inspection report.
Market Fined
Due to the irregularities found, the establishment was fined by Procon and will have 15 days to file an administrative defense.
The agency stated that inspection actions such as this one aim to ensure compliance with consumer protection laws by removing from the market products that may pose health risks or that do not comply with marketing standards.
The investigation into the origin of the laundry detergent showing signs of counterfeiting is expected to continue in order to determine the products’ source.
