PCDF Shuts Down Illegal Trade in Weight-Loss Pens and Anabolic Steroids
One suspect was also arrested during Operation Bula Negra, aimed at combating the illegal trade and distribution of medications
On Tuesday (September 15), the Federal District Civil Police (PCDF) seized a large quantity of medications, weight-loss pens, and anabolic steroids that had been purchased in Paraguay and resold in Candangolândia (DF). A suspect was also arrested during Operation Bula Negra, which aims to combat the illegal trade and distribution of medications and controlled substances that pose a potential risk to public health.
While executing a search and seizure warrant, police located a large quantity of weight-loss pens containing tirzepatide—known by the brand name Mounjaro—which were being sold illegally.
The 11th Police Precinct (Bandeirante Unit) also seized various other products intended for aesthetic, dermatological, and body and facial contouring procedures, including Dysport, Sculptra, Line Body, and Glow GHK-CU, as well as various types of anabolic steroids.
According to the investigations, the products were purchased in Paraguay and subsequently stored in a residence located in Candangolândia, without adequate preservation and storage conditions—a circumstance that could compromise the quality and safety of the products and, consequently, pose a risk to consumers’ health.
Sales were conducted primarily online, with the products subsequently distributed via motorcycle courier services.
The investigations also revealed that the products were offered to consumers without requiring a prescription and were presented to interested parties as part of a so-called “alternative protocol” as a substitute for a medical prescription.
According to the PCDF, there are indications that, in some cases, the medications were administered on-site in an irregular manner.
The use of fake prescriptions gave rise to the name of Operation Bula Negra, in reference to the clandestine sale of medications and the attempt to replace medical guidance and prescriptions with protocols developed outside of health regulations.
One of the suspects who was arrested will face charges of forgery, corruption, adulteration or alteration of a medicinal product, embezzlement, and smuggling.
In addition to being a crime, the PCDF warns that the illegal sale of medications without medical supervision can expose consumers to health risks.
