Anvisa Alerts: Counterfeit Shipment of Mounjaro Identified and Seized; Learn How to Avoid False Products
The Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (Anvisa) announced on Thursday (30) that it had ordered the seizure of a counterfeit shipment of the popular drug Mounjaro. The measure, published in the Federal Official Gazette, aims to protect public health and ensure the authenticity of pharmaceutical products available on the market.
How Was the Counterfeit Batch Identified?
Eli Lilly do Brasil Ltda., the company that holds the registration for Mounjaro, was the one that detected the presence of a counterfeit item in circulation. The medication in question bore the batch number D881474, which is a legitimate batch registered in the company’s system. However, the serial number associated with this batch, 302199651396, was classified as incompatible, indicating that it was counterfeit.
What to Do with the Suspected Medication?
Anvisa’s guidance is clear: all Mounjaro-brand weight-loss pens bearing batch number D881474 and serial number 302199651396 must be immediately seized. Under no circumstances may these products be distributed, sold, or used by consumers.
Anvisa Recommendations for Safe Purchases
In an official statement, Anvisa emphasized the importance of purchasing medications exclusively from properly licensed pharmacies. It is essential that products be purchased in their original, complete packaging and that a receipt always be requested. The agency advises that, upon identifying any medication suspected of being counterfeit, the public and healthcare professionals should not use it and should contact the registered manufacturers to verify its authenticity. Mounjaro, whose active ingredient is tirzepatide, belongs to the class of GLP-1 receptor agonists, commonly known as “weight-loss pens.”
