Brazil steps up fight against digital piracy and reports more than 8,000 illegal sites to the UN

The National Council for Combating Piracy and Crimes against Intellectual Property (CNCP), an agency of the National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon) of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP), has stepped up its crackdown on digital piracy and cybercrime. Recently, the CNCP reported the blocking of 393 illegal websites in Brazil and has now sent a new list to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a United Nations agency, to be included in the Wipo Alert with 7,931 links that have been the target of inspections and are under orders to block access.

In addition to sending it to WIPO, the CNCP will notify content indexers on the internet, requesting that search engines de-index the reported links and monitor possible attempts to violate the blocking orders. Removing these pages from search results is fundamental to reducing consumer exposure to illegal content, fraud and illicit monetization schemes.

According to the CNCP’s executive secretary, Andrey Corrêa, in addition to guaranteeing the protection of intellectual property, Wipo Alert plays an important role in global cybersecurity by preventing fraud and digital crimes that are often facilitated by pirate websites. “This international collaboration mechanism is a clear example of how cooperation between countries and organizations strengthens the fight against criminal activities in the digital environment.”

The links reported remain confidential in order to prevent new infringements and avoid the replication of the platforms on new domains. The inclusion of these sites in the Wipo Alert system allows rights holders and international authorities to be aware of infringements, broadening the scope of intellectual property and consumer protection measures.

The Wipo Alert program

Wipo Alert is a platform created by WIPO to help combat digital piracy and other related crimes. The system works as a restricted-access database and allows authorities and rights holders in different countries to share information about infringers and have a rapid and coordinated response against online piracy.

The platform is key to unified global action in the fight against digital piracy, with the exchange of information between governments and international organizations. This sharing increases the effectiveness of copyright protection and online security measures, reducing the distribution of illegal content and benefiting both consumers and content creators. The system also ensures that once a site has been identified as infringing in one country, it can be blocked and de-indexed in other nations.

Commitment to digital security

The CNCP points out that the actions are in line with the Brazilian strategy to combat digital crimes, in accordance with the Consumer Defense Code, which provides for protection against abusive practices in the supply of digital goods and services. These initiatives are part of actions coordinated by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, such as Operation 404 and Operation Redirect, which have already resulted in the blocking of thousands of illegal platforms.

The measures seek not only to protect intellectual property, but also to guarantee citizens’ digital security, preventing cybercrime, financial fraud and theft of personal data.
