SP Highway Police seize million-dollar cargo of cigarettes smuggled from Paraguay
Military road police officers seized around 825,000 packets of cigarettes of various brands that had been smuggled from Paraguay, on Monday (21), on the Senador Assis Chateaubriand Highway. Two men were arrested for smuggling and two lorries seized.
During an operation, officers from the Tactical Ostensive Road Group of the 2nd Military Road Police Battalion approached a lorry travelling at high speed. When questioned, the driver said he was transporting boxes of cigarettes from Paraguay.
At the same time, the police also saw another lorry, with the same characteristics as the first, travelling at high speed, parked at a petrol station in Penápolis, in the interior of São Paulo. A man was approached and the police found the vehicle key in his shoes.
The driver confessed to the crime and said that he and another lorry driver were taking 950 boxes to Minas Gerais. The pair were arrested in the act and sent to the Federal Police in Araçatuba.
