Procon and Civil Police shut down trade in counterfeit goods in Uberlândia

On Thursday morning (16), the Municipal Procon and the Uberlândia Civil Police served arrest warrants and search and seizure warrants during an operation at a business and a residence in the Tibery neighborhood.

According to information obtained by g1, counterfeit handbags and backpacks of various brands and characters were being produced and resold at the locations.

“In both places we found products being manufactured without the slightest quality control. When we talk about lack of control, it goes from things like: does that paint have heavy metals that could compromise children’s health? Does that backpack meet the ergonomic standards that orthopedists believe are necessary?” explained the chief deputy of the 9th Civil Police Region, Marcos Tadeu de Brito.

A truck had to be commandeered during the operation in order to move the seized goods. The owner of the warehouse was arrested and taken to the police station to give explanations.

“Another issue is that it’s a clandestine trade, there’s no tax collection and taxes are no longer collected. Not to mention the issue of unfair competition: by selling much cheaper products, they undermine honest traders,” said the police officer.

Other places where counterfeit items are produced and resold will also be targeted. According to the Civil Police, the seized material will be taken to São Paulo and made available to the brands’ official representatives.
