An inspection operation carried out by the Federal Revenue Service in Bocaiuva on Thursday resulted in the seizure of products valued at approximately R$500,000. The action focused on combating smuggling, embezzlement and the sale of irregular items.

During the inspection of six commercial establishments, electronics, drinks and other foreign articles were found that had been introduced into the country without being properly regularized. According to the agency, the products were unaccompanied by documentation proving that they had been legally imported.

The Receita Federal explained that smuggling refers to the entry of prohibited goods into Brazil, while embezzlement involves trying to evade paying taxes on legally permitted imports. Both constitute infringements of customs legislation.

As well as jeopardizing tax collection, these practices are detrimental to legal commerce and put consumers at risk, due to the possible lack of quality control and safety of the products sold.

The action is part of a series of measures adopted by the Federal Revenue Service to curb tax evasion, combat the informal market and guarantee fair conditions of competition in the retail sector.
