Enforcement activities – Action against piracy seizes R$640,000 in counterfeit products

On May 28th and 29th, Procon SC took part in a joint operation between various agencies that resulted in the seizure of R$640,000 in counterfeit products. In Florianópolis, São José and Palhoça, approximately 8,000 items of clothing and 4,000 pairs of shoes were collected, as well as electronic products, perfumes and handbags – all suspected of being pirated.

Participating in the action were the Santa Catarina Civil Police, through the Environmental Crimes and Crimes Against Consumer Relations Investigation Department (DCAC/DEIC), the State Council for Combating Piracy (Cecop) and the Santa Catarina Treasury Department (SEF/SC).

The sale of pirated products not only harms legitimate brands and the health and safety of consumers, but also generates tax evasion, unfair competition and feeds the informal market, which causes significant damage to the economy.

The National Forum Against Piracy announced in February this year that the damage caused by piracy to the Brazilian economy in 2024 was R$468 billion.

According to the Civil Police, the suspects will be charged with crimes against immaterial property, crimes against consumer relations and crimes against the tax order, and are subject to sentences ranging from two to five years in prison, as well as fines.
