Anatel and Ancine sign cooperation agreement to fight audiovisual content piracy

The National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) and the National Film Agency (Ancine) signed a new Technical Cooperation Agreement on Thursday (15) with the aim of stepping up the fight against piracy of audiovisual content, such as films, series and soap operas.

According to the agreement, Ancine will be responsible for determining the blocking of websites and applications that distribute pirated content. Anatel will be responsible for coordinating broadband service providers to ensure that clandestine products are blocked.

In February 2023, Anatel launched the Plan to Combat the Use of Clandestine Decoders for the Conditional Access Service. The agency seeks to curb illegal TV boxes, which can contain malicious software and threaten users’ privacy, as well as providing access to pirated content.

For Anatel, the agreement signed on Thursday is important to promote fair competition in the audiovisual industry and to expand efforts to prevent the operation of so-called “gatonets”.

According to Anatel, between 2018 and 2025, 1.5 million unapproved TV Boxes were seized.

Since the inauguration of Anatel’s Anti-Piracy Laboratory, 24,700 IPs and 4,400 domains used to distribute content irregularly have been blocked.

Ancine, on the other hand, claims that piracy financially harms the audiovisual industry and job creation.
