PRF seizes cargo of 12 million cigarettes without invoices in Muriaé

On the afternoon of Tuesday, June 4, the Federal Highway Police (PRF) team from Muriaé made a significant seizure during a routine inspection of cargo vehicles at the Operational Unit located on the BR-116 highway, at KM 705.

The agents stopped a trunk-type truck from the city of Paraíba do Sul/RJ. The vehicle was being driven by a 53-year-old man, while the 56-year-old owner was a passenger.

During the approach, the truck’s owner said that the cargo compartment was loaded with cigarettes of various brands, to be delivered to the city of Abreu e Lima, in Pernambuco. However, the police were suspicious of the quantities and values declared on the tax document presented.

When they checked the goods, the agents found 1,210 cardboard boxes containing more than 12,100,000 units of cigarettes. The cargo was without the necessary documentation required by tax legislation for the transportation of such products by road.

Due to the irregularity, characterized as a crime against the tax order, the truck was seized and sent to an accredited warehouse. A police report was drawn up against the cigarette manufacturer, located in the city of Duque de Caxias (RJ).

The Minas Gerais State Department of Finance has been notified and will be responsible for taking the appropriate fiscal measures, such as imposing fines and collecting the taxes due. The value of the cargo of cigarettes seized was estimated at approximately BRL 2,600,000.00.

This action by the PRF highlights the importance of rigorous inspection on the highways to curb the transportation of irregular goods and ensure compliance with tax laws, protecting the economy and public health.
